AOL and webmail services like GMail, Hotmail and Yahoo each have their own non-standard mail protocols. That limits the ways in which you can access those accounts -- you'll need to use a web browser, or software from that provider. However, there are conversion programs available, which allow you to download messages from those accounts into a standard POP3 email program. Some also allow you to send messages through those services from your regular email program.
